When it came time to work each morning, I would set the timer for no more than an hour, and then, barring fire or bodily emergency, I would not budge. You might be sitting down for a hearty Irish breakfast at your Dublin Airport layover and for some reason your brain takes you back to your suitcase and not just your suitcase but that moment you were packing nine or ten hours ago and thought “I only have one formal work meeting on this trip so I only need one dress shirt” and two casual ones and then you’re hit with the certainty that at that moment when you were supposed to then pack two casual shirts you got distracted by toiletries or maybe it was the dog or maybe it was your husband reminding you you’re traveling on the busiest travel day of the year so you’d better hurry up well whatever it was you’re pretty damn certain there is only one shirt of any kind in that duffle bag and then you choose not to be shitty to yourself and instead revel in the fun surprise that this work trip will require shopping.In this week’s Sunday NYTimes, writer Ben Dolnick recommends the simple kitchen timer:

I find it helps me train my mind to do that about other things and to remain present in whatever task I am working on at any given moment. How do I see this related to ADHD? Doing something with my non-dominant hand means necessarily focusing more than I normally would one one specific thing, often a very small thing. Zipping pants up and down, grabbing a glass of water, whatever. That serves as a reminder to, as often as you can all day, do things you would normally do with your dominant hand with the other. How it works: You put a band aid or some other reminder on a finger on your non-dominant hand. I’m starting this game again today - Non-Dominant Hand. I have found the book “How to Train a Wild Elephant” full of useful practices and games (I call them thought, not the author) that help me remain present during the day. Mindfulness to me is also simply about being present in the moment. For someone, mindfulness means strictly Buddhist meditation. The way I say it, mindfulness is literally the opposite of the scattered mind I usually experience with ADHD. It’s a great trick especially for slow readers with ADHD. I’ve found that listening to the audible version at 1.5x or even 2x the speed usually helps me pay even more attention as I read, AND I can get the book read in a fraction of the time it would normally take me. The cool thing about audible is that you can change the narration speeds up to 3x as fast or twice as slow so that you can read along at your own pace.

Plus with the Kindle for Mac, iPhone, and iPad apps I never have to worry about bringing the book with me, leaving it behind, losing my place, etc. I’ve found that the kindle version of the book makes it easier to follow along to an audio version, and it’s way easier to take notes, make highlights, annotate, save bookmarks, and easily define a word you don’t know (built in dictionary). That means way less opportunity for distraction. But when I do both at the same time I usually don’t get distracted at all because my eyes and my ears are both engaging in the same task (understanding the words/interpreting the story) and thus more parts of your mind are actively attending to the same subject (reading the book). Sometimes when I just read I get distracted by noises around me, and when I just listen I get distracted by scenery around me.

I like to read the print version of the book while following along to the audio version. For the anon who asked about help concentrating while reading books, one really good too I use that really helps me concentrate is to get the print version of the book and then to also buy the audio version (I use audible).
